The Final Girls Review

The Final Girls

by Riley Sager

I picked requested this ARC from the publisher after my wonderful friend Lexie @PRationality recommended it to me.

HUGE thank you to Dutton/ Penguin Random House for allowing me the chance to get my hands on it early, especially since the author is local to me.

The Final Girls definitely did not fall into any of my usual genre categories. I’m not huge on Thrillers, though I’ve read a few here and there. The Final Girls is an amazing book! It was so intense in fact that I read the entire thing, cover to cover in ONE night & on a work night no less! From the moment I opened it I was drawn into Quinn’s life, her terror and anxiety and the desperation to be normal again.

Her fiancĂ© Jeff leaves something to be desired however. His character while having no grasp on how impacted she is from the events in her life he has a crappy personality and is not very complex. Fortunately, Jeff being horrible does not in anyway take away from the story and the other supporting characters are really brought to life. I was impressed with the way the author was able to bring certain characters that were already deceased to life. Rodney became a hero in my eyes and I hurt for Amy though I hardly had time to know her. The ending shocked me. I didn’t see it coming at ALL.

I had tried to figure out who HE was many times and I had come up with a multitude of possibilities but I never guessed the truth. The only hint I had was small and near the end and even then I thought that tiny hint was suggesting something else entirely. The content was never too extreme. There was of course some adult scenes, some sexual content and some violence, but nothing so over the top that it was offensive and every bit of it was crucial to the story line. So if you’re a fan of YA Thrillers this book would absolutely be something (in my opinion) that you might enjoy.

The Fallen Kingdom
By Elizabeth May,

I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley from the publisher. I can’t even begin to express my love for this series. I am beyond sad to see it come to and end, though it is as they say all good things must…

I remember in the beginning the fascination I felt with Kam’s world… the struggle she seemed to feel keeping up pretenses and then watching it all be destroyed.

The most major flaw I saw in this series was how May sort of let the small steam punk aspect that started out so strong fall away. She threw bits in there once more at the end but I think it would have helped greatly if this was a consistency throughout. The good however far outweighs the bad and this is another series that I believe had the most perfect ending it could. Some books chose happy endings, other the opposite. This ending NAILED IT. I like how the Fae are pretty much all evil jerks (as they were intended to be according to like every myth). I liked that for the most part the characters in this series had their priorities in order which far too often is not the case in YA. Mostly I just love the atmosphere and the romantic tension though!

Some character thoughts as I read:
(Please note: I found myself periodically yelling “ Kick his A**, Kick her A**, and kick it’s A**” throughout the whole story)

Scorcha! Man that girl.

DERRICK!!!

Catherine, as lovely and brilliant as always

And MaCay… SWOON! As per usual.

It all comes together in a force of dynamite and glitter.

These Ruthless Deeds- Mini Review

These Ruthless Deeds
by Kelly Zekas & Tarun Shanker

The highly anticipated sequel to These Vicious Masks was finally in my possession and saying I was excited would be putting it mildly. I enjoyed book one as I am a huge fan of historical fiction and historical alternate fiction. Add the X-men ish style abilities and you have a winner!

I felt These Ruthless Deeds got off to a slower start than TVM and I was worried for a moment I wouldn’t be able to get into the story. It took me a bit to refresh my mind on the characters and what exactly happened in the previous book. But once it got going it was all action.

The End of this book is what really did it for me, so many unexpected twists and revelations, followed by the ultimate shock. Possibly the best What The Heck moment in the entire series. I was actually shaking my head saying “No way. No she didn’t” referring to the author but SHE DID. Be prepared guys because you will feel things! I almost cried, and it’s been a while since a book brought me to tears.
